According to the International Council of Nurses, an NP/advanced practice registered nurse is “a registered nurse who has acquired the expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded practice, the characteristics of which are shaped by the context and/or country in which s/he is credentialed to practice. A master’s degree is recommended for entry level.

Basic Life Support
CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) training is required of many health-care professionals and lay rescuers to help revive, resuscitate, or sustain a person who is experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in adults and 88% of all cardiac arrest happen in people’s homes. Providing CPR can double a person’s chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. If CPR is started within 4 minutes of collapse, and defibrillation is provided within 10 minutes, a person has a 40% chance of survival.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support training
Advanced cardiac life support or advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) refers to a set of clinical interventions for the urgent treatment of cardiac arrest, stroke and other life-threatening medical emergencies, as well as the knowledge and skills to deploy those interventions. The American Heart Association and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation performs a science review every five years and publishes an updated set of recommendations and educational materials.

Basic life support for healthcare providers (BLS) is designed by American Heart Association for anyone in the healthcare field to fulfill the basic CPR requirement. Each person that successfully completes the BLS for healthcare providers will receive a American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider certification card that is good for two years.
